FAA: GA Airports Play 'Pivotal Role' in Our Society
May 21, 2012
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) last week released the results of an 18-month study on general aviation (GA) airports that "highlights the pivotal role GA airports play in our society, economy and the entire aviation system," according to the agency. "We applaud the FAA for its efforts to quantify and promote the many and diverse functions that occur at our nation's general aviation airports," said Jeff Gilley, NBAA's director of airports & ground infrastructure, who advised the FAA during the study period. "This report is a useful tool that can assist all of us in general aviation to better articulate and communicate the essential role that general aviation airports play in our nation's transportation system." The Case for EMAS: Improving the Outcome of a Runway Overrun
May 17, 2012
Currently, 68 engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) systems are installed at airports around the world, with the vast majority of them in the United States. The installations range from large Part 139 airports such as Kennedy (JFK) and O'Hare (ORD) to some solely general aviation airports such as Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey and Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) in South Carolina. "Existing EMAS installations and those planned for future establishment at airports, where they are needed, will greatly improve safety; certainly the safety benefits will far outweigh the costs," according to Jeff Gilley, NBAA's director, airports & ground infrastructure. From that date until September 2014, the airport will be down to one operational runway. Learn More.

FAA Examines Ways To Better Communicate Importance of Small Airports
July 20, 2011
The term "general aviation airport" can include so many varying activities that even the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants to better describe the function of the nation's nearly 3,000 "non-primary" airports. "The aviation community will benefit if the industry and FAA can better communicate to the public and elected officials the value and role of the myriad essential functions that take place every day at these airports," said Jeff Gilley, NBAA director of airports & ground infrastructure. NBAA has participated workshops on the topic hosted by FAA officials. Learn more.
