Travel Tips for Long Haul Travel
Speakers: Dr. Paulo Alves, MedAire
Food poisoning. Malaria. Hepatitis. DVT. Cholera. TB. Yellow fever. They’re among a rising number of illnesses that crewmembers can be exposed to during international travel. The longer the distance traveled, the higher the risk for illness and infection.
Understanding potential exposure is the first line of defense. To do so, crewmembers must be familiar with the pathogens that cause them and the routes of exposure in the human body.
A crewmember might make the right choice to drink bottled water while traveling. But when he adds ice from a local water source, he’s been exposed to risk. Another crewmember might wear protective gloves when working with biohazard waste, but isn’t aware of how to properly remove the gloves, exposing a fresh skin wound to blood borne pathogens.
This session will:
- Include an overview of blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens and food/waterborne pathogens;
- Highlight travel health statistics which illustrate the most common medical events that happen to crewmembers traveling internationally;
- Feature various online and informational resources that crewmember can access to keep them healthy during travel – ranging from travel health alerts, and current information from the Centers for Disease Control to immunization recommendations from the World Health Organization; and
- Include numerous tips on how to proactively plan for infectious disease.

Threat and Error Management: A Cross Functional Risk Management Tool for Business Aviation
Speakers: Phil Roberts, PAR Travel Tech; Peter Stein, Johnson Controls
Threat and Error Management (TEM) is a systems approach to safety first developed at the University of Texas. Embraced by air carriers worldwide, and recognized by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and International Air Transport Association (IATA) as an aviation safety best practice, TEM offers a simple, intuitive, and practical approach for business aviation operators of all sizes to proactively identify and manage risk through all levels of its organization. The presentation's purpose is threefold: (1) to introduce the basics of TEM; (2) to illustrate and provide examples of how TEM can be applied with equal vigor across all organizational functions; and (3) to highlight additional educational opportunities. A question and answer period will follow the presentation. |
