Heard in the Halls

What brings you to the S&D Conference for the first time, and what do you expect to get out of the meeting?

Sherry Whitcomb, Qualcomm, San Diego, CA
“My co-workers said I had to come because it is a wonderful Conference. I expect to network and learn a little more in the breakout sessions. I took two SPDP classes: Weather and Safety and Security.”

Katie Streitwieser, MedAire, Tempe, AZ
“I am here with our company’s exhibit. I am really looking forward to meeting the people that I speak with on the phone each day. It’s really nice to put a face with a name.”

What was your first Conference, and what keeps you coming back year after year?

Donna Krol, CIGNA, Hartford, CT
“This is my third NBAA S&D Conference. I actually came to the first one in 1989. The first conference had 68 people, and this one has over 2,000 Attendees. I am interested to see how it’s grown. I have heard a lot of good things about it, as far as the networking capability and the classes being offered. I am excited to be here.”

Tim Maystrik, Air Routing International, Houston, TX
“My first Conference was 17 years ago. The Conference then was valuable for the networking that was taking place. The people were so enthusiastic. It was an opportunity to meet face-to-face people who you have worked with over the phone. The value, from that point to today, is very similar. Fortunately, the NBAA and S&D Committee have put together great programs that enhance the professionalism of this group [of people] who are on the front lines.”

Sharon Forbes, Dupont Aviation, New Castle, DE
“I was at the very first Conference in 1989, and hopefully I will be at the big one – the 20th. The reason I keep coming back is because the friendships and relationships I formed at the very first Conference have been one of the highlights of my professional career.”

Aleesa Kurtz, Westminster College Flight Operations, Salt Lake City, UT
“I am a second-year Attendee. I came last year for the first time to receive a scholarship award, which I used to get my dispatcher’s license. I wanted to come back this year and give back to NBAA schedulers and dispatchers, and do anything I can to help newcomers succeed.”

Troy Ladue, Mass Mutual Financial Group, Springfield, MA
“This is my fourth Conference. The reason I keep coming back is for the networking and educational sessions and, quite honestly, to get refreshed as a scheduler/dispatcher. We get so caught up in day-to-day duties. This is a time to be with peers, to network, learn and get refreshed, and then be able to go back to work and be more effective.”

Janell LaCoste, NetJets, Columbus, OH
“My first Conference was in 1989 – the very first one. I learned so much from the 68 people that were in attendance. Before that, I felt I was the only person who did what I did. It was a wonderful experience. In the past 19 years, I have only missed one Conference [because of a snowstorm]. I have made so many friends and gained so much professionally from this seminar.”

Charlie Stockton, Elliott Aviation, Des Moines, IA
“My first Conference was Las Vegas in 2000. I keep coming back for the networking and educational opportunities. Also, this is a fantastic place to see all of our vendors. We can meet everyone we do business with in one location.”

Holly Whitaker, Exclusive Air Inc., Nashua, NH
“My first Conference was in 1992, when we experienced a big snowstorm at Denver Stapleton Airport. The reason I keep coming back is because the networking opportunities and the face-to-face relationships that you gain from seeing your customers and your vendors has been beneficial in helping my business grow over the past 17 years.”

Welcome and Committee introductions by NBAA Schedulers & Dispatcher Committee Chairwoman Jenny Showalter, Showalter Flying Service

Keynote: Tom Whittaker

This year’s keynote speaker Tom Whittaker will take you to new heights as he shares how “Attitude Determines Your Altitude!” In 1979 Whittaker, an outdoor adventurer and mountaineer, was involved in a serious car accident resulting in an amputated foot. Fueled by his determination to rebuild himself as a more potent individual than before the tragedy, Whittaker overcame pain and anger to embark on an extraordinary life of service and adventure. In 1981 he created the Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group. By harnessing the power of civic responsibility and volunteerism, he provided the lessons of his own recovery to assist others. This ground-breaking work, now in its 27th year, led Newsweek magazine to name him as one of “America’s Unsung Heroes.” In 1998 Tom became the first disabled person to stand on the “Roof of the World,” the summit of Mt. Everest. Join us as the author of Higher Purpose tells his amazing story and allow him to inspire you to embrace change, take responsibility for outcomes and drive forward with integrity and passion!
