Business Aviation Airport Access Program (BAAAP)

Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (ABQ) - Albuquerque, NM

Updated July 22, 2003

Both airport and city management appear to be focused primarily on airlines with plans to relocate general aviation operations to a less convenient out-lying airport. The Sunport is located approximately 3 mi. southeast of the city, while the proposed Double Eagle II Airport is approximately 7 mi. northwest of it. NBAA has not been able to review ABQ’s master plan to confirm this information because the city has suspended updating the airport’s master plan for the foreseeable future. Also of concern to NBAA Members are plans to close the crosswind runway in order to expand airline terminals. All activity is on hold. An informal noise-abatement program is being used effectively, but new real estate development near the airport will generate noise issues in the future. Access to the airport following the events of September 11, 2001, and a subsequent threat to a shut-down nuclear reactor still have not been addressed to the satisfaction of NBAA Members and remain concerns.
