FAA Asking for Customer Feedback Regarding Super Bowl XLII
The FAA is requesting customer feedback regarding the air traffic services they provided in the Phoenix area during Super Bowl XLII and the FBR Open golf tournament. The responses that they receive will help them in making decisions and improving service at future events. Customers are asked to download the survey form, fill it out, and then send it either by e-mail or by traditional postal mail to the addresses supplied in the survey. The survey form can be downloaded below:
Super Bowl XLII will take place Sunday, February 3rd at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. Since this is considered a "Special Security Event", the FAA has published two TFRs. The first will encompass a 2nm ring around the stadium and will be in effect from 1300L (2000z) until 1500L (2200z) and will prohibit GA operations at Glendale Airport (GEU). A second TFR, in effect from 1500L (2200z) until 2230L (0530z) will be a 10nm mile radius around the stadium area. This TFR will prohibit GA operations at Goodyear (GYR) Airport and Glendale (GEU) Airport from 1300L (2100z) to 2230L (0530z) on February 3, 2008. An additional 30nm TFR will be in place from 1500L (2200z) until 2230L (0530z) and will require aircraft utilizing that airspace to be on IFR flight plans. In summary, Glendale (GEU) Airport will be prohibited to GA operations from 1300L (2000z) until 2230L (0530z) and Goodyear (GYR) Airport will be prohibited from 1500L (2200z) until 2230L (0530z) on game day.
Additionally, the FBR Open Professional Golf Tournament will be taking place in the Scottsdale area the same week and it is anticipated that there will be a substantial increase in air traffic that week in the Phoenix area. However, there will NOT be a STMP for the Super Bowl or the golf tournament.
Air traffic management initiatives such as Ground Delay Programs or Airspace Flow Programs may be utilized along with published reroutes to expedite arrivals and departures in a safe and orderly manner. NBAA will keep you informed as more information becomes available.
The FAA has published a Super Bowl web page that provides information regarding the TFRs and the local airports affected by the Super Bowl. This web page can be found at http://www.fly.faa.gov/superbowl/. The FAA has also published a Letter to Airmen regarding the 2008 Super Bowl which you can find at http://web.nbaa.org/public/ops/airspace/restrictions/2008_sb_letter_to_airmen.pdf.
A note about Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX): Even though PHX is not located within the boundaries of the TFR, the airport could still be affected depending on the runway configuration in use at the time. When PHX is in a west-flow configuration, GA aircraft will not be able to depart on the north SIDs. If PHX is in an east-flow during the TFR, there will be some potential difficulty in vectoring GA traffic onto the final due to the 10 NM ring and the high MVAs to the southwest of the airport. In either case, ATC may be able to provide a reroute to allow GA traffic to continue to operate; however, there is no guarantee of this and operators utilizing PHX during the TFR hours should plan for possible delays. Please see the TFR information below for more information.
